Hopefully you’ve already read my
Top Wardrobe Tips and have started getting your wardrobe organised. I hope you’re already feeling more in control of your clothes and, more importantly, more confident about getting dressed every morning.
But here’s something I truly believe…
Real style confidence doesn’t start with buying more clothes. It starts with looking after the ones you already own.
In fact, that’s exactly how my business began.
For over 40 years I’ve helped women understand that when you feel good on the inside, you naturally shine on the outside. Your wardrobe isn’t just about fashion. It’s about taking care of the things that help you feel like you.
Why wardrobe maintenance matters
One of the saddest things I see is beautiful clothes that have simply not been looked after.
Women often tell me, “I loved that jacket,” or “I wish I could find another handbag like that.”
The truth is, many of those treasured pieces could have lasted for years longer with just a little care.
Looking after your wardrobe saves you money, reduces waste and helps you build a collection of clothes you genuinely love wearing. Instead of constantly replacing things, you begin investing in pieces that stay looking fabulous season after season.
Remember…
Take care of your clothes, and they’ll take care of you.
My Top Wardrobe Maintenance Tips
Choose the right hanger
Believe it or not, your hanger makes a huge difference.
- Slim velvet hangers are brilliant for shirts, dresses and blouses because they stop clothes slipping off.
- Chunkier wooden or shaped hangers are ideal for jackets and coats as they help maintain the garment’s shape.
- Knitwear hangers help prevent those annoying little shoulder bumps that can appear when jumpers are hung incorrectly. They’re also perfect for T-shirts and jersey fabrics.
- Soft clip hangers are ideal for skirts and trousers. Make sure the clips are rubber-coated or padded so they don’t leave marks on delicate fabrics.
A little trick I’ve used for years…
Hang your trousers from the hem rather than the waistband. The weight of the waistband helps pull out many of the creases naturally.
Love your leather
Leather is just like your skin – it needs feeding.
A good leather cream every season keeps handbags, boots and jackets soft, supple and looking luxurious.
The handbags I use regularly get treated even more often because they naturally experience more wear.
I also never leave home without protecting my leather before bad weather.
I keep a water-repellent spray at home and if the forecast looks wet, everything gets another quick spray before I head out.
Don’t forget suede
Suede needs a little extra love.
A suede brush keeps the nap looking fresh, while regular water-repellent spray helps protect it from unexpected showers.
It’s a small job that makes a huge difference.
Buy once. Love forever.
Some of my handbags are over 30 years old, and people still ask if they’re new.
That’s not because they were expensive.
It’s because they’ve been cared for.
When you look after your wardrobe, every time you open your wardrobe doors you’re greeted by clothes, shoes and accessories that still make your heart sing.
The foundations of confidence
We spend so much time talking about fashion trends, new collections and what to buy next.
But hardly anyone talks about the foundations.
The little habits that help your wardrobe stay beautiful.
The simple maintenance that makes every outfit feel that little bit more special.
Get these foundations right and something wonderful happens…
You stop fighting your wardrobe and start enjoying it.
And when you enjoy your wardrobe, your confidence grows.
Because style isn’t about having more.
It’s about making the most of what you already have.
So take care of your clothes, your shoes and your accessories.
They’ll reward you every single time you wear them.
Together, let’s build wardrobes we love…
…and continue to rock our style.
